What Is Vivid Sydney? 

Vivid Sydney is an annual festival of creativity, innovation and technology, which changes Sydney for twenty-three days and nights. Amazing art installations and 3D light projections bring the city to life, illuminating the path for motivational talks, captivating shows, live music, and gourmet dining experiences. This festival takes place in May and June and lasts for three weeks.

Vivid Sydney transforms several buildings and landmarks in and around the Sydney central business district into an outdoor nightly canvas of art with its light sculptures, multimedia interactive work, and building projections.

From Friday, May 23, 2025, to Saturday, June 14, 2025, Vivid Sydney will once again light up the Harbour City! In honour of its 15th anniversary, the festival has been revamped to include five interconnected zones: the Goods Line and Inner City, Martin Place and CBD, Darling Harbour, Barangaroo, Circular Quay and The Rocks, and Barangaroo. Lightwalk: The Vivid Sydney Light Walk will illuminate the Sydney Harbour foreshore, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, as well as portions of the central business district. Every evening, the Lighting of the Sails marks the beginning of Vivid Light.   As the Sydney Opera House comes to life with unique, expansive projections selected by globally recognised artists, take in the immersive experience created by ambient music.  

In 2025, it will present Kiss of Light, a memorial to the late Australian artist David McDiarmid, highlighting his audacious and unrepentant work.

Museum of Contemporary Art Australia

Jeremy Whisky will compose an original score to accompany the projections that will be used to illuminate the facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. These projections will be created by the renowned First Nations artist Vincent Namatjira and give the impression of King Dingo.

Customs House

A vivid celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Australian fashion label Romance was Born will be included in the now-famous kaleidoscope of colour that is Customs House.

Vivid Light Walk

The popular Light Walk is the most well-known part of Vivid Sydney. Some of the most beautiful outdoor light installations can be seen along this road through Sydney's central business district. It goes through Circular Quay, The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Barangaroo, and Haymarket.

You can "choose your own adventure" along the Vivid Sydney Light Walk instead of following a set path. The walk is full of places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere and installations all night long. Along this trail are places to eat and drink, so there are many warm, cozy places to rest your feet.

During the festival, the lights come on at 6 p.m. every night, and there is a lot of work to see, so the Light Walk is well worth going to more than once. Free event After the Fact features the brightest brains debating the day's breaking stories every weeknight during Vivid Sydney. How to Get There?

Regarding parking at Vivid Sydney, it is advised that you use the extended public transportation system during the festival instead of bringing your own vehicle. Train: Circular Quay, the nearest station, is about two minutes from The Rocks. Due to the closure of the roads surrounding the harbour, Circular Quay transportation will be altered on weekends.

Bus: On weekdays and weekends, buses travel frequently to and from the city; additional services are offered on busier evenings. Road closures will affect some buses, causing them to adopt other routes and stops.

Due to road restrictions, buses that typically travel to and from Circular Quay will be moved to Martin Place on Friday nights starting at 6 p.m. and on weekends beginning at 5 p.m. Please allow additional time to get to the port. Ferry: The centre of The Rocks is just a short walk away if you take a ferry to Circular Quay.

During Vivid Sydney's busy times, with bigger weekend crowds, ferry services are a particularly popular way to get about. It's advised to provide extra time and look into other modes of transportation if you're considering riding the ferry.  

Be prepared for lengthy lines at wharves, particularly on weekends in the middle of the afternoon, and consider many modes of transportation. If ferry wharves are crowded, look for signs directing you to the closest bus or train alternative.

Light Rail: On weekdays and weekends, there is frequent light rail service in the Sydney CBD, South East, and Inner West, with stops that are easily accessible on foot from Vivid Sydney venues.

L2 Randwick light rail services connect Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) through the centre of Sydney's central business district, along George Street. In contrast, L3 Kingsford services connect Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Both lines are running.

For pedestrian safety, the L2 and L3 light rail services between Town Hall and Circular Quay will not operate on Fridays after 6 p.m. and on weekends starting at 5 p.m. Travel to Town Hall by light rail, then continue walking down George Street to Circular Quay.
